Eggshells are nearly always thrown away, but that’s just inefficient. Going green is all about making the most of everything you use and what you would usually consider as detritus once you’ve cracked open your egg is no exception. The shell is full of goodness that can be beneficial to you and your environment in all sorts of ways!
Egg shells will get stuff clean. And I mean really clean. Pulverise the shells, mix them with a touch of water and detergent and then use them with a rag to give your oven, surfaces, pots and pans a scrub. You’ll be amazed by the results the mild abrasiveness that the shells add to the mix will give you.
The same effect can be used to clean the inside of your drain pipes. Place crushed shells in the bottom of your sink and just let them get washed down each time you run the water. Far more natural than the raft of cleaning products and far less expensive this is the way to keep pipes clean and in full flow. You’ll need quite a few shells to do the whole house, but it’s well worth it as the abrasive shells demolish all that grease and gunk that’s been clogging the place up for years.
Finally how about removing those nasty coffee and tea stains from your mugs and cups. Damp the inside of the vessel you want to clean pop in the shells and then leave them over night. In the morning add some water and give the mug a rinse and a wipe and you’ll see no more tea stains!
You can use eggshells to treat mild skin irritations or just patches that are little bit on the itchy side. Mix crushed shells with apple cider vinegar and leave the concoction for a couple of days before applying to the areas that are annoying you.
This one I am less sure of, but apparently you can use the delicate membrane from the inside of the shell to sooth ailments such as minor cuts and scrapes, particularly around the edges of your nails.
This one is more beauty than health. You need to absolutely crush the shells to a powder and then mix them with an egg white. Once that is done you can use the mixture as a facial. Smear it on and let it dry before peeling it off and marvelling at your lush feeling face.
It doesn’t get much greener than this. There is a scientific report from a few years ago that states eggshells may well be the secret to producing a viable hydrogen fuel system. Amazing. And if that wasn’t enough the bods behind the research also created a way to remove the collagen rich membrane from the inside of the shells as part of the process. Good work.
Vince Johnson spends a lot of time breaking eggs to make omelettes, he believes they are the breakfast of champions, which is something he needs to see him through a day of researching the most unusual of unusual gift for Find Me A Gift.
