Everyone battles negativity, but what determines your success in life is how successful you are at battling with negative thoughts and coming out victorious on the other side.
It is impossible to achieve lasting success while dwelling on negative thoughts, that much most people agree on. However, where many begin to have difficulty is figuring out how to overcome those negative thoughts and dwell only in the positive.

1 – First, don’t dwell on negative thoughts.
A negative thought popping into your head unbidden is not a conscious choice. Dwelling on it and continuing to wallow is a conscious choice. When a negative thought occurs to you, rather than mulling it over in your head, don’t spend any time on it at all. Consciously put it aside in favor of more positive thoughts.
2 – Second, overwhelm your negative thoughts with positive ones.
Especially if a negative thought has a strong or powerful emotional component to it, such as fear, it can be quite difficult to simply “set it aside.” In that case, the only thing you can do is overwhelm the negative thought with positive affirmations. After all, if you are unable to quiet the negativity, why not just drown it out?
3 – Third, create visual reminders of the positive thoughts that you want to replace your negative ones with.
Whether the visual cues consist of written words that are posted where you can see them or pictures of the kinds of positive things that you would like to attract to you, make sure that you surround yourself with visual reminders of the positivity that you wish to dwell on. You will be surprised – pleasantly – at the huge difference this makes in your mindset!
4 – Fourth, repeat your positive affirmations even when you are not battling negative thoughts so that they become second nature.
You can’t save your positive affirmations hidden for when you are actively battling negative thoughts, they will not be deeply enough entrenched that way. Rather, you must rehearse those positive thoughts day and night until you truly believe every word that you have spoken, down to the bottom of your soul. Then, and only then, will those positive words be powerful enough ammunition against your negative thoughts.
5 – Fifth, don’t judge yourself for having negative thoughts, just deal with them and move on – then grow from the experience.
After all, everyone is tempted to be negative. Judging yourself, and lowering your own self-esteem in the process, only makes the situation worse. Love yourself enough to forgive yourself for the negative thoughts you still feel tempted to dwell on. This will make it much easier to move on to being positive!
