My oldest baby is growing up so fast. Just the other day she watched my toddler for 30 minutes so I could take a nap after a sleepless night. She’s also starting to read on her own and is really enjoying it. This means she is also starting to make her own decisions and spending more time on the computer.
Just the other day she came home from school and did a school homework test online. She got out my laptop, typed in the URL of her teacher’s blog, found the link to the test and then logged herself in! Holy moly, I was amazed. Then she sat there for an hour doing the math homework test and reading her teacher’s blog.
My 6 year old spends time online everyday, usually watching shows, but she knows how to text and use Facebook and YouTube and can read what is posted. Thank goodness she’s learned to ask me if she can watch certain shows. We’ve had teaching moments in the past when she’s had the ipad or iphone taken away for watching something she wasn’t allowed to watch! The #ShareAwesome campaign seeks to build an understanding among parents and students that no matter the device, the app or the networking site – the skills we need to be safe and positive online are similar to what you need offline.
Today’s families use digital technology in every aspect of life – from learning and socializing, to gaming and shopping! Broad access and use of technology is awesome – and opens so many new opportunities for so many students. But like any aspect of life, there are things you need to know to make positive, safe decisions.
My kids know their limits with the technology in our house and understand they need to talk to me and my husband while making decisions about their activity. We take lots of photos and videos at home but only share the really personal ones with close family and friends. I am only comfortable sharing the photos and information that don’t reveal too much about my kids with the general public.
National PTA has partnered with LifeLock to share awesome ways families can create an open, evolving conversation about positive, safe decisions when using digital tools. It’s all part of having a happy, healthy lifestyle. For you, your family, your friends, and the whole world – everyone benefits when you #ShareAwesome!
