When I was in college I worked at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute as an intern. I remember seeing patients come and go and it always felt so foreign to me. Like something that happened to other people. I was really proud to work there but cancer just felt like another world to me. Of course, I was young and naive. Even when a friend who also happened to work at Dana-Farber with me developed a benign brain tumor, it still seemed so far away.
Why I am Participating in the Jimmy Fund Walk
Fast-forward 17 years and I have lost my own mother to brain cancer. She was a patient at Dana-Farber but her last tumor snaked into her brain in such a way that it was inoperable.
While my mom was sick we learned there is not much research on brain cancer and it is still so unknown and difficult to treat. So many people with glioblastoma multiforme end up with the similar prognoses. This is why I decided to walk in the The Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk on September 27. We need more awareness of this disease, more support and more research. Won’t you join me? You don’t have to be in Boston to do this – you can sign up as a virtual walker here!
We all have some connection to cancer. Whether we’ve fought the fight, or know someone who has, cancer is a presence and something that requires extensive treatment, research and support. Some of the easiest ways to help in the fight against cancer are by fundraising for causes and participating in events such as the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, which supports Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Lace up and take steps toward a cancer-free world by participating in the 2015 Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk!
