Best Skin Protection from the Sun

Do you spend a lot of time in the sun? Most kid love doing things outside during the summer which involves sun. Yes, the sun can be very good for us, but there are dangers as well. One of my kids has very sensitive skin and the sun affects her so much that if we are not careful she ends up with a red, bumpy itchy rash that is not easy to treat.

But as long as you practice skin protection from the sun you can reap these benefits:

  • Boosting your intake of Vitamin D
  • Reducing blood pressure
  • Improving cardiovascular health
  • Improving mood by releasing endorphins

Spending TOO much time in the sun without adequate skin protection leaves you at risk for sunspots, skin cancer and damaged skin cells.

Here are 5 smart ways to protect your skin from the sun

Always Use Sunscreen

Always apply SPF lotion or cream on your skin. Make sure to have at least SPF 30 for a broad spectrum sunscreen. This can help protect your skin from both UVA and UVB. Apply sunscreen at least 15 to 30 minutes before going outside not just when you are going to swim but also in regular sunny days.

Use natural and non-toxic sunscreens to minimize absorbing harmful ingredients through your skin. Here are a few to try:

Formulated with at least 95 percent natural ingredients, it’s non-chalky and silky.

Limit Your Sun Exposure

The sun’s rays are most intense between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, so limit your exposure during those hours. Also, pay attention to UV index which can be found in news reports.

Consider downloading the EPA’s SunWise UV Index app, which is free, which provides a daily and hourly forecast of the intensity of UV radiation from the sun to help you plan your outdoor activities.

Take Cover

While it’s never advisable to stay too long on direct sunlight, even being in the shade poses risks. Along with sunscreen, make sure you’re adding another layer of cover such as long sleeves and pants as well as hats and sunglasses to protect your face, eyes and neck.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water during the summer. Try to avoid sugary drinks and stick to plain or fruit infused water. You can also use water to help moisturize the skin in hot weather conditions. Use moisturizer on your skin to help on dry skin and reduce dry patches after a day at the beach, pool or out in the sun.

Keep your water bottle handy and filled at all times. This water bottle is amazing! My kids took these to camp and they were the best!

Try this organic, lightweight, unscented, all purpose daily moisturizer. I’m always looking for a lightweight moisturizer that won’t clog up my pores especially in the summer! I am amazed at the value of this organic lotion.

Consult your dermatologist

It’s always a good idea to get your skin checked out with your dermatologist. They are trained to spot issues that you may not even be aware of or that you can’t visually see, such as the skin on your back or neck.

Skin is your largest organ, so give it the care it deserves by taking care of it with safe products and methods. Take advantage of the benefits that sunshine has to offer while being responsible with your exposure to it.
