Cold Thanksgiving Appetizers
When I was growing up, my parents never made breakfast on Thanksgiving day. I would be so hungry and my parents would say that they were preparing a big meal so they didn’t want to fill up beforehand. They barely ate before the appetizers came out in the early afternoon.
But not eating anything all day until the holiday food comes out will almost totally ensure that you will overindulge. Your blood sugar will drop and your brain is essentially planning for a binge.
Katherine Tallmadge, a registered dietitian and op-ed contributor to LiveScience, says, “When people skip meals, they end up feeling so hungry by dinnertime that they overeat.”
To avoid this scenario, Tallmadge recommends eating a regular breakfast and lunch on Thanksgiving, at the same time you normally would eat these meals. Most people will eat more on Thanksgiving than they would on a normal day, but by eating a regular breakfast and lunch, you’ll likely eat less calories overall than you would if you skipped meals.
That’s why having these cold Thanksgiving appetizers out on the counter is a good idea! Having appetizers on hand will keep guests satiated so they don’t end up overeating at the meal.
