Essential Oils to Repel Wasps

Wasps are part of the ecosystem, and they have both a positive side and an unpleasant side. Wasps assist during the pollination process though not as much as bees. However, they are valuable in controlling pests as most wasps feed on pests and insects. If you are into farming, a nest of wasps near your farm may be of benefit.

Who would want to have a barbeque with wasps buzzing all over? I guess no one. Wasps can be annoying. One negative result of having wasps near your home is that they can become very aggressive and attack you. They become aggressive if their nest is disturbed as they are very protective of their young ones.

A sting from wasps can cause allergies and is quite painful. So how do you avoid them from forming their nest near your bedroom window or porch? A good solution would be to use essential oils that are natural and smell. Some essential oils have properties that repel insects and pests.

These essential oils include the following…

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil comes from the mint family. It has a cooling, fresh aroma, and the property that gives it that cooling effect is called menthol. The scent from peppermint oil is strong and aromatic, and this repels wasps.

Blended Essential Oils

A research study conducted in 2013 concluded that when you mix some essential oils, the scent repels wasps. The essential oils used in the first blend included clove, geranium, lemongrass. The other mixture contained clove, geranium, lemongrass, and rosemary had the same effect. This blend of oils has a distinct, unique aroma that repels wasps.

How to Use Essential Oils to Repel Wasps

  1. Add 8 drops of peppermint oil to 2 cups of water and a soap dish. Put the mixture in a spray bottle and mix well. Spray the blend outside your house where wasps like to build their nest. Wasps build nests from where the old nest was. Spray the mix on where the old nests were to prevent them from using that space.
  2. Soak cotton balls to a blend of essential oils that consist of clove, geranium, and lemongrass. Place the cotton balls at the entry points.
  3. Another alternative would be to plant ex. peppermint plant, clove, lemongrass plant around your house. By doing this, you will keep the wasps away.
  4. You can use a diffuser to repel wasps. Put the essential oil blend of clove, geranium, lemongrass, and rosemary in a diffuser. Let the oils fill your surrounding as the fumes repel the wasps from getting into your house, and at the same time, it will give your home an exotic, unique aroma.

Some essential oils do have properties that repel wasps. The scent is strong, and this makes it unbearable for the wasps to buzz around. Why don’t you try out the essential oils mentioned above if you happen to see a nest of wasps near you? Get to enjoy your chilled-out time on your porch without any fear from stings.
