Five Ideas for a Healthy Thanksgiving

In recent years, it seems that Thanksgiving has become a day of binging, eating until one cannot eat anymore, then collapsing on the couch. Eating yummy food all day is fun, but it’s not what Thanksgiving is all about. It’s important to remember all the reasons for gathering on this fourth Thursday in November.
Eating is the first thing one thinks of when one talks Thanksgiving. All the pumpkin, apple, sweet potato, corn and cranberry dishes one could want. Who wants boiled carrots when there are green beans smothered in cream and crispy onions? What if there could be some small changes to make these traditional dishes a bit healthier? The green bean casserole could be made with a homemade béchamel sauce and wonton strips. Make a multigrain stuffing with apples and cranberries. You can also use a packet of gelatin in the cranberry sauce and use just half the sugar!
