What Is Green Tea?

Green tea is a type of tea that is made from Camellia sinensis leaves and buds that have not undergone the same withering and oxidation process used to make oolong teas and black teas. Green tea originated in China, and since then its production and manufacture has spread to other countries in East and Southeast Asia. Wikipedia

Why Use Green Tea for Skin?

Green tea is an anti-inflammatory for skin conditions such as rosacea, psoriasis and eczema. You can actually drink a cup of green tea and then let the skin ‘breathe’ by not applying any product for at least 20 minutes.

Tea has tannins that can dry out bacteria, reducing acne. The antioxidants in green tea are also beneficial, fighting off the free radicals that damage skin cells and cause signs of aging.

Research shows that green tea can fight off skin disorders like psoriasis, eczema and rosacea. This Green Tea Soap Recipe includes ground green tea mixed with soothing goat’s milk soap as well as whole green tea which can act like an exfoliant to help rid the body of dead skin along with the green tea itself. You can also add essential oils that will benefit and soothe your skin issues.

What Do I Need to Make this Soap?

Melt and pour soap is the easiest soap to make as there are no calculations to make and you don’t have to worry about skin irritation from lye.

Green Tea Soap Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 lb goat’s milk soap
  • 4-5 tablespoons ground green tea (from 1 cup loose)
  • 1 tablespoon whole green tea
  • 60 drops essential oils (maybe a tree, chamomile or minty scent)

Instructions

  1. Grind about 1 cup loose green tea in a blender or food processor and set aside.
  2. Cut the soap into cubes and place in double boiler or microwaveable bowl. If using double boiler, add 1/2-inch of water in bottom pot and put on medium-low heat. If using microwave, heat in 30-second increments on medium high heat.
  3. Once heated, stir in ground tea and whisk slowly. If you whisk too quickly it will get bubbly. Add 4 or 5 tablespoons depending on how dark you want your soap. Then use the spoon to stir in the essential oils.
  4. Pour into soap molds and sprinkle the whole green tea on top as you desire.
