It has almost been five years since my mom passed away, with my dad having passed away not even nine months after her. I can’t get over how it’s been five years, but when I look back at memories from the last few years I can see how far I’ve come.
There was a time after my parents passed away that I literally could not get out of bed. Well maybe I moved from the bed to the couch but just enough to get my kids fed and clothed and I looked forward to nothing more than to go back to bed as soon as I possible could.
But that wasn’t fair for my family. They needed me to be more present for them and not just giving them the bare minimum. What helped me was knowing there were other people who were feeling the same things I was. I was less lonely knowing that how I was feeling was universal to losing loved ones.
It still took a long time to learn how to live my life without my parents. You never actually get over losing someone and you never really move on, but you can learn to live again. You can feel happiness again.
