This Healthy Apple Bread is an easy quick bread that’s delicious for a snack or for breakfast. This is one of those delicious bread recipes that won’t last long in your house!

Healthy Apple Bread
One thing I love about this bread is all the ingredients are pretty standard pantry staples! You can also substitute the way you want and it will still come out tasting unbelievable.
Most apple bread recipes call for chopped apples, but I am not a fan of chunks of fruit in my bread. I would rather shred the apples on a cheese grater or omit the apples altogether and simply use applesauce.
For this recipe I measure the applesauce. If you would like to use apple shred or chunks, use 1 cup apple (1-2 apples) and 1/4 cup applesauce.

How to Store Healthy Apple Bread
You can keep this homemade bread on the counter as long as it’s wrapped well with plastic wrap. I like to also put it in a plastic bag or an airtight container. Do you have a bread container? Here are some good ones!
Which Apples are Good in Homemade Bread?
The best apples to use in homemade bread are those that have a balance of sweet and tart flavors and won’t break down while baking. Here are some of the best apples for bread recipes:
- Granny Smith.
- Jonagold.
- Cortland.
- Braeburn
- Honey Crisp
And remember, if you aren’t using apple pieces and simply using applesauce, then obviously this list is moot. Unless you decide to go the extra mile and make your own homemade applesauce to use in your homemade bread! YUM!
Ingredients for Healthy Apple Bread
For the bread:
- 2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 2 cups all-purpose flour or white whole wheat flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
- ⅓ cup honey
- 2 eggs
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
- 1/3 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
For the streusel:
- 1/3 cup quick oats
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons cold unsalted butter (cut into cubes)

Instructions for Healthy Apple Bread
In a small bowl, stir together the chopped or grated apple, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, and 2 teaspoons cinnamon and let sit.
Next, in a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Now, in a larger bowl, combine the yogurt, applesauce, honey, eggs and vanilla. Beat on medium speed until combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula. Reduce mixer speed to low and slowly mix in the melted and slightly cooled butter.
Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until just combined, being careful not to over mix. Gently fold in the apples and any cinnamon-sugar left in the bowl. Transfer batter to the prepared loaf pan.

Make the streusel:
In a medium bowl, stir together the oats, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Use your fingertips to work the cold butter into the oat mixture. It may take some elbow grease to mix this up but it will be worth it! Sprinkle the streusel over the bread batter in the pan and gently press it down with your hand.

Bake bread for about 60 minutes, until a toothpick or knife comes out just about perfectly clean. Let bread cool in the pan on a wire rack for 15 minutes before carefully removing to the rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
