Dealing with eczema can be frustrating and overwhelming. But before you go running to the drug store for expensive creams and ointments, have you considered trying some home remedies for eczema? Not only are they typically more affordable, but they can provide natural relief without harsh chemicals. From cool compresses to oatmeal baths, there are plenty of options that can help soothe and reduce eczema. And the best part? You probably already have some of these remedies in your kitchen or bathrooom.
Aloe Vera is a type of cactus, and many people are familiar with its juice, which is often sold in stores. This plant has been used for centuries to treat various skin conditions and minor wounds.
Aloe Vera for Eczema
Eczema is a skin condition that causes itchy, red, dry, and cracked patches of skin. It’s often caused by an overactive immune system that makes the body attack its healthy tissues.
In one study, researchers applied aloe Vera to the skin of 14 people with eczema three times per day for two months. They found that treating the skin with aloe vera significantly reduced itching compared to no treatment.
In addition, researchers rated the severity of each person’s eczema at the beginning and end of the study. Using aloe vera reduced the severity by 65 percent after two weeks. After four weeks, researchers saw a reduction in severity by 86 percent, compared to no treatment at all.
This same study gave participants only 1 gm of aloe gel or placebo cream three times per day for two months (analysis conducted by Dr. Peter Atherton, Ph.D.). The results showed a significant improvement in itchiness among those who used aloe gel.
Aloe vera is available in many forms, including:
- Moisturizers
- Gels
- Ointments
How Do You Use Aloe Vera for Eczema?
One method is to apply aloe vera directly to your skin. You can break open a leaf from a live plant and apply the gel inside directly to your skin.
Aloe Vera contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties that may help soothe the skin when applied topically. It’s also been shown to be an effective moisturizer. Aloe vera gel can be mixed with coconut oil and applied directly to the affected areas of skin, left on for 15 minutes, and then washed off. Do this twice daily for best results.
Does Aloe Vera Have Any Side Effects on the Skin?
Aloe vera gel may have certain side effects, including mild burning or itching and allergic reactions in some people. If you experience skin irritation after using an aloe vera product, discontinue use immediately and see your doctor if the symptoms persist.
Aloe Vera and Coconut Oil for Eczema
Both aloe vera and coconut oil have antimicrobial properties, so they may help reduce the risk of infections from scratching. They may also improve skin hydration and promote healing. However, more research is needed to confirm these effects in people with eczema. If a person has sensitive skin, they should talk to a doctor before trying either product to avoid irritation or allergies. So, if you want, you can combine these two ingredients and apply them topically to your eczema.
Alternatively, you can also use either coconut oil or aloe vera on its own. Just make sure that the products you choose are 100 percent pure, organic, and free of additives.
All in all, it does seem that aloe vera is a viable option for those struggling with eczema. It’s affordable, non-invasive, and has almost no side effects (aside from some minor itching). Why not give this plant-based remedy a shot?
