How to Get Rid of Mice Naturally

How to Get Rid of Mice

I may have a first hand experience of getting rid of mice. We moved into this house 4 years ago and only saw about one mouse each year. Even though we are surrounded by woods, it’s been pretty uneventful. We’ve seen the mice scurrying along outside around the bushes but that’s about it. Well, something changed in the last year.

Suddenly, we’ve been seeing lots of mice. Usually they are in the mouth of the cat, which I suppose is a good thing, but they are still gross. Still wiggly and unpredictable. Still dirty and disease-ridden.

So there begins my quest to get rid of mice without making my pets sick. Do you know how to get rid of mice without poisons? Even “natural” poisons can make your pets sick. I’ve heard of using zinc supplements for mice so they will explode BUT if your pet gets near the affected rodent, it can get very seriously if not fatally ill because of the phosphorous gas that builds up inside the mouse.

Home Remedies to Get Rid of Mice

Of course you can use mousetraps and that is normally the best course of action to get rid of mice. But I find mousetraps sort of like the jack-in-the-box game. You know there might be a mouse in the trap when you look, but when you actually see it it’s so frightening! And not to mention the traps that are closed up and you have to take it apart to see a mouse inside!

I am going to list some pet-safe natural poisons for mice, but remember you will still have to take care of getting rid of dead mice. But honestly, I’d rather deal with a dead mouse than a squirmy one in my pantry closet.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar & Water
Spray this mixture around the perimeter of your house as well as in any access points inside. Make sure to re-apply the solution once a month.
  2. Fabric Softener Sheets
Mice can’t stand the smell of fabric softener. Stuffing these sheets in suspected entry points will not only keep mice at bay, but keep your home smelling fresh and clean!
  3. Strong-smelling Soap
Using a pungent soap like Irish Spring will deter mice and other rodents and insects. Place soap around the perimeter of the house.
  4. Steel Wool
This tough material will keep mice away because they are unable to chew through it. Simply stick steel wool in any crevices or holes in your home.
  5. Instant Mashed Potatoes
Sprinkle instant potatoes around corners or access points or in known areas. The mice will eat the flakes and search for water, and then the flakes will expand in their bodies and kill them.
  6. Baking soda and Sugar Combo
Add 1 cup of baking soda to equal amount of sugar and mix it thoroughly. The sugar attracts the mice and the baking soda will soon kill them because the soda will bubble up inside their bellies and explode. Add the baking soda to a disposable container or jar lid where you know mice will get to it. This mixture is safe for pets!

Peppermint Oil for Mice

Mice have an amazing sense of smell – they rely on this rather than their sight. This is how they ALWAYS find their way to any kind of food left out of stored the wrong way.

Peppermint is strong and intense, and while we may love it, mice HATE it. According to Victor Pest, peppermint contains very potent menthol compounds that irritate their nasal cavities. A whiff of peppermint will keep them away.

One way to use peppermint oil for mice is to add a few drops to cotton balls and add them to openings or corners where pets can’t get to them. If you are placing them in an area with pets you can use small plastic containers with holes punched in the tops. This is sufficient to release the smell without making your pets sick.

You can also make a spray by boiling water with hot pepper, black pepper and cloves. After its cooled, add peppermint oil and spray outside along edges of the house.
