Janu Basti: It is the most commonly used ayurvedic remedy for knee joint pain. Janu means the Knee joint in Sanskrit. Basti means to hold. Janu basti is a procedure that includes oil massage and stagnant lukewarm oil over the affected knee for about half-hour. The benefits include: pain relief, lubrication of joints, increased circulation in the area, increases flexibility and mobility, relaxing and toning of joint and muscles.
Apart from this Abhyanga (massage) from medicated oils like Mahanarayana taila, Neemba taila, bhringaraja taila, Bala taila etc are proven to be beneficial.
Massaging helps in: pacification of aggravated Vata, restoration of lubrication in joints, prevents age-related changes, strengthens and nourishes joints, relieves stiffness of joints and improves mobility.
Ayurvedic herbs for knee pain
- Guggulu: It is an oleo resin that is collected from commiphora mukul hook tree. Guggulusterone is main ingredient in this resin. Guggulu has hypolipidemic, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, hepatoprotective, chemoprotective, immunomodulatory, antimicrobial and overall antioxidant properties. The dose od purified guggulu churna is 2-4 grams. It can be taken in the morning with warm milk.
- Triphala: Triphala translates to three fruits. This term is used for three fruits – Indian gooseberry, black myrobalan and belleric myrobalanin Ayurveda. The triphala powder is polyherbal compound. It is used to treat nerve debilities, oedema, liver conditions, inflammation, ulcerative colitis, etc. It is also a great anti-ageing and laxative agent. The dose of Triphala churna is 3 to 5 grams. It is ideally taken at night with lukewarm water. Triphala churna along with guggulu churna is also very potent combination for joint pain.
- Shallaki: Indian frankincense plant also known as bosewellia serrata is used to cure Vata dosha vyadhis. The resin obtained from this plant is used to treat sandhigatavata (joint pain). The dose of shallaki powder is 3 to 4 grams and it should be taken after food with lukewarm water for best effects. Tablets are also available as a more palatable option.
