Have you ever had good guacamole? I mean a really amazing flavorful guacamole recipe? My brother makes this amazing dish and I finally got the details out of him! It would make a great healthy recipe if you add it to your turkey sandwich or bean burrito!

I took the kids up to see my family in northern New England a few weeks ago. It’s always so comforting to be there, where the kids can roam free and we all have a good time together. This is my parents legacy. This is what they did for us and it’s amazing.

They always did their best to raise my brother and me without any animosity or sibling rivalry. They encouraged us to be friends because they themselves were friends with us.

So now when I am with my brother I feel my parents with us. I feel like they are nearby and I don’t feel so lost. I’m not sure why we had to experience the horror of a glioblastoma multiforme that ended my mom’s life or watch my dad try and fail to live without her, but I can feel confident knowing that my brother is the other part of me that keeps me feeling whole. He helps me feel anchored.

He also makes the most amazing guacamole in. THE WORLD!

Seriously.

He has a method that he has been so kind to share and it all starts with a Marble Mortar and Pestle.

Mortar and Pestle

In this guacamole recipe he used garlic scapes that likely came from his garden. So he started off by chopping the onion and garlic and adding the spices to the mortar.

This is the most time-consuming yet totally rewarding part of this guacamole recipe. It takes him a good 20 minutes to grind the ingredients by hand, but this is the secret to the recipe!

Once it is all ground up, it will be juicy and should look a bit like this.

You need to use ripe avocados that are soft yet not dark. Chop them up in pieces and add to the mixture in the mortar.

Next use a potato masher to smush the guacamole mixture. If it’s easier you can transfer it from the mortar to a regular bowl at this point. Mash the mixture until it is fairly smooth, then enjoy!

I love that this side dish is so trendy right now! Although I don’t think this can top my mom’s version, I will be sure to give this one a try!
