epsom salt in detox bath

How Do Detox Baths Work?

Epsom salt is a mineral called magnesium sulfate and has a long history of use in both traditional and folk medicine. The difference between regular salt and Epsom salts is that Epsom salt is essentially, as the name suggests magnesium.

It’s often used by professional athletes to soothe sore muscles and WHO even considers it to be “one of the most important medications needed in a basic health system.” It’s also great for internal use but in this article we will focus on external use, specifically baths.

Not only is this healing mixture of Epsom salt and essential oils great in baths, it also makes for a nourishing and healing foot soak. Epsom salt mixed with the right essential oil will completely relax your muscles and allow you to let your body soften and loosen up after a long day.

Your liver and kidneys are responsible for most of the detox processes in your body. But both Epsom salt and essential oils have proven health benefits that can make your body stronger, more resilient, and more efficient when it comes to the physiological process of detoxification.

Even if you ignore all the potential health and beauty benefits, a wonderfully scented and soothing bath will help you relax and let go of tension and anxiety. The intoxicating aroma is just an added plus.

The Best Essential Oils for Detox Bath

This part is really up to you. It all depends on your preferences, any potential skin sensitivities, and even your budget. Everyone has different tastes and I find that the best way to find the perfect blend is to just experiment. That being said, I want to share a few of my favorite oils to use in detox baths.

tea tree oil

Tea Tree Essential Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)

This is one of the most popular essential oils and with good reason – the compounds in tea tree make this oil a powerful antimicrobial and antiseptic agent that can significantly reduce dandruff and soothe itchy skin. It’s also great for acne prone skin and anyone with oily skin that produces a lot of sebum. It’s very potent but also slightly drying, so make sure to use it in moderation.

lavender essential oil plant

Lavender Essential Oil (Lavandula angustifolia)

This scent is one of the most recognizable ones. It’s sweet, floral, and yet incredibly calming and has a rich medicinal and culinary tradition. It’s great to use when you want a relaxing evening bath right before you go to bed. It’s a moisturizing oil and would suit you if your skin feels tight and dry and is in dire need of hydration. It can also reduce swelling and pain which means it can provide quick and lasting pain relief.

chamomile plant

Chamomile Essential Oil (Matricaria recutita)

Chamomile Essential oil is an amazing choice if your skin is sensitive and blemish prone. Chamomile is incredibly gentle but amazingly it also has powerful anti-inflammatory and even analgesic properties. This makes it a great oil to use if your skin is overly sensitive, easily irritated and agitated or prone to various forms of dermatitis, such as rashes, since it will relieve irritation and pain.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil (Eucalyptus)

Eucalyptus essential oil is often used in over the counter medication because it’s a strong but pleasantly smelling decongestant. This makes it great to use if you have a cold or even just a stuffy nose. It can even be used as a treatment for certain respiratory issues such as sinusitis or asthma.

The strong antiseptic and antimicrobial properties also add another layer of defense against certain bacteria and viruses. The refreshing, “green” aroma can also give you a boost of energy if you come down with the flu or the common cold.

When it comes to topical application do not use essential oils directly on your skin. The same ingredients that make them so effective and powerful can also make them irritating if you don’t use them correctly. Always make sure you dilute them in a carrier oil first (jojoba oi is a great skincare oil or you can even use regular vegetable oils or coconut oil). Since water and oil don’t mix you should do the same even if you are adding essential oils to your bath – always dilute them first. If it’s your first time using a certain essential oil it’s also always a good idea to do a patch test first, just to make sure you don’t have any sensitivities or allergies.
